Habitat Vietnam and Techtronic Industries extend support to improve health, living environment and climate resilience for vulnerable communities in Vietnam

Vietnam, 16 December 2022 – Habitat for Humanity Vietnam organized a ceremony to mark the commencement of its new projects in Kien Giang province and Thai Nguyen province. The ceremony hosted representatives from the local government authorities, Women’s Unions, the project management board, the media, and community members.

The two projects are under Habitat Vietnam’s more extensive program, funded by Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd (TTI). The program directs its support to vulnerable groups, namely, the ethnic minority communities in Thai Nguyen province and hazard-prone families in Kien Giang province. People in the two project sites often face geographical difficulties, such as droughts in Thai Nguyen and saltwater intrusion in Kien Giang, leading to many health problems and diseases.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Giong Rieng Commune spoke at the kick-off ceremony.

Besides building houses and facilities in line with disaster safety and water–sanitation (WASH) standards, the program also adopts the participatory approach to safe shelter awareness (PASSA) to empower local initiatives to address the pressing issues of the communities.

“Throughout our previous projects in Thai Nguyen and Kien Giang, we never ceased to be inspired by the positive changes realized by the communities, especially through the PASSA process. Habitat Vietnam is committed to and hopeful that more government partners and donors will join us in building strength and self-reliance for vulnerable groups”, expressed Ms. Maricelle Regino-Borja – National Director of Habitat for Humanity Vietnam.

By the end of October 2023, the program will equip 100 families with new houses and WASH facilities. Over 150 students will enjoy a new latrine. Training workshops and communication campaigns under the program will help almost 1580 people increase their knowledge and skills on how to build a safe house and safeguard their families’ hygiene and health

As a Corporate Partner since 2019, Habitat for Humanity and TTI work together on building new homes for low-income households and addressing the problem of poverty housing in the communities where it operates. In Vietnam, Habitat for Humanity Vietnam and TTI has partnered to provide housing support, WASH facilities and disaster relief to vulnerable communities since 2020. By end of 2021, the project has benefited 104 households and 500 students./.
